Stanger Hospital Scoops the Cleanest Hospital Award

Stanger Hospital has come up tops in the Cleanest Hospital competition, where 24 hospitals within KwaZulu-Natal were assessed by the Provincial Department of Health.

This project was launched in July 2011 by two participating companies which are Kimberly Clark and Industro Kleen working together with the Department of Health in the Province. The aim of this project was to improve cleanliness in the Hospitals and the competition was from September to February 2011 with assessments conducted in January and February 2012.

Trainings for participating hospitals were conducted by both Kimberly Clark and Industro Kleen, where Infection Control Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, Systems Manager and Cleaning Supervisor were trained on basic cleaning practices, colour coding and the use of different cleaning products.

Stanger Hospital takes House Keeping as an inherent facet of Infection Prevention and Control as good housekeeping is directly proportional to lower nosocomial infection rates. Hence this project enhanced and reinforced current policies, protocols and practices. The Hospital therefore took this competition seriously, a general staff meeting to launch the programme was called by the Hospital CEO-Miss R.T Ngcobo and Mrs Sarika Sujan (Infection Prevention and Control Manager) was delegated as a Project Manager, all staff members were requested to buy in to the project and do their little bit in making sure that the Hospital remains clean at all times. Further meetings were held with all cleaning staff, IPC reps and Departmental Managers where the tool was discussed and roles and responsibilities were designated to all team players. Regular audits were conducted by the IPC Manager throughout the duration of the competition.

When Miss Ngcobo was asked about how she felt about the Award “Stanger Hospital has always regarded cleanliness as a therapeutic measure to assist in patients progress as the saying goes ‘cleanliness is closer to Godliness’, I just want to say thank you to all staff members for co-operating and taking this project and owning it and to the team that led the project, a job well done, a standard has been set by us as a hospital and it is still within us to keep the standard or aim to continue improving in cleanliness”.
