Silver Award in 2004

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you heard right, Grey’s Hospital (a first time participant in the Good governance programme) deservedly won the 2004 Premier’s good Governance Silver Award, at the presentation ceremony held at the International convention Centre, on Friday, 05 November 2004.

The event was marked by intellectual verbal articulations that inspired all who had blazed the cold and rainy evening weather, to attend the 5th presentation ceremony. From the tone of the first speaker, it became clear that the event was about honouring the effective delivery of public services and the dedication and commitment of public servants.

This point was later reiterated by the Honourable Premier, when he said “There is no place for a public service that is obsequious” and further delighted the house when he reported that “a comprehensive KZN Citizens Charter will be in place, by the end of March 2005”, a statement which was followed by loud ululations.

A very tense evening one might be tempted to add, characterized by guessing, suspense, and macro-analysis of each and every micro-gesture, with the self-propelled thinking that anything that moved would somewhat provide the faintest clue as to who had won the day

The six-month long assessment process was a true reflection of how far transformation has gone at Grey’s Hospital, as it saw various departments, various categories of staff getting down and jiggy with it, to showcase to the judges, the province and country - the achievements of the hospital, its diversity and the immeasurable commitment and dedication from the staff of this hospital.

The grilling process was indeed exhausting to all, and without the priceless contribution from all members of staff at Grey’s Hospital, the Silver Award would not have been attained.

As first time entrants we must therefore take pride in being awarded this prestigious trophy, as it resembles both excellence and brilliance in the provision of health services, in response to the socio-economic challenges of the province

Grey’s Hospital certainly stands tall with and among the best of the best corporates and organizations in the province and country, and we can proudly say, “We are up there with the best”

We also thank the KZN Department of Health for continued support and leadership. The management of this hospital and staff alike are confident that with such a partnership, “the greatest is behind”. We thank the Premier for his vision and leadership of the province, as well as the two sponsors, PriceWaterHouse Coopers and Standard Bank, for their faith in the efforts of public service and for inspiring and promoting excellence in the provision of services to those in need

Said Professor Ronald Green-Thompson (Head of the KZN Department of Health) in congratulating the Grey’s Hospital staff and management, “I am certain that this will enhance the motivation of the staff as this recognition must be a morale booster. I have no doubt that Grey’s Hospital will continue service excellence. Well done”.
