King Edward VIII hospital partnership with Carte Blanche “Making a Difference"

In July 2007 the hospital participated in a Carte Blanche project of “Making a Difference” where the show was celebrating their 20th birthday, and wanted to give back to Neonatal services. The focus was mainly on the challenges that prevent institutions from providing a high quality service to both the children and neonates. Our neonatal services was screened on TV by MNET on the Carte Blanche programme

The positive publication of our neonatal service via television was the main objective. We wanted also show the world the excellent work done by public sector on neonatals as opposed to the negative publicity about the alleged collapsing status of public health care.

The programme generated lot of interest from the corporate sector and individuals pledging to donate items towards assisting the hospital maintain the quality of neonatal care.

A Trust under Carte Blanche was then established for interested donors to contribute.  This included a donation of a New/renovations to POP (Paediatric Out Patients) worth R20m by BHP Billiton. Construction of this building got delayed due to a negative a geo tech report on site water levels. The hospital is currently in consultation with infrastructure development and Architects appointed by Carte Blanche to consider reviewing the plans. The medical equipment and other items for neonatal care totaling above R1 million have been received and officially handed over on the 26th January 2010. Among the donors of medical equipment:

This project has created a positive interest, not only for King Edward VIII Hospital but for the Department of Health as whole. This is the beginning of many great things to come for the department; as Carte Blanche is planning to focus on more hospitals within KZN as well as other provinces. This is indeed the beginning of a long lasting relationship.

The hospital management took a conscious decision to engage with Carte Blanche, driven by  governments call to the corporate sector to support government in addressing the plight of people and to meet their needs.
