Accreditation celebration at LUDWM hospital

Lower Umfolozi District War Memorial Hospital celebrated the Council of Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA) full status accreditation in style when they hosted well wishers from other institutions and COHSASA personnel. This function was meant to show the staff that what they were doing in the past few years has bore the good fruits. There was ululation and joy to staff members when finally Prof. Stuart Whittaker from COHSASA handed over the certificate to management.

“What you have achieved here today is testimony to the fact that any public sector hospital in South Africa can achieve compliance with quality standards provided there is commitment, ownership of the quality improvement process and hard work”, said Prof. Whittaker. He further challenged staff and management not to rest after being accredited but to keep improving their work for their benefit of the public they serve.

The programme started in 2003 when the institution was visited by COHSASA evaluation team. This was not an easy task as it required a full participation from all staff members. Hospital policies had to be formulated and so many improvements had to be implemented to meet the standards set by COHSASA.

Prof. Whittaker also outlined on how the patients are going to benefit on Accreditation where he said there will be peace of mind in knowing that facilities have clear objectives to guide practices and systems that integrate all service areas in facilities maximize efficiency.

The good news that the Hospital has met with all prescribed International Standards came in April 2007. As the only Maternity Hospital in KZN LUDWM Hospital remain committed in being the best in their field and strive continuously to create a Quality Culture. 25 components were assessed during the surveys.

Delivering the main speech for the day the Area 3 General Manager Dr Lindiwe Simelane congratulated LUDWMH for getting full accreditation.

“In these days of severe criticism of the Public Health Sector more especially hospitals this serves to indicate that achieving international standards is not difficult’, said Area 3 General Manager said Dr. Simelane.

She added that the Hospital is giving the assurance that it will maintain and sustain its standards. This will be measured by the compliments received from the public with regard to its service delivery.

The function ended by the unveiling of art paintings that were donated by Foundation for Hospital Art, a USA based organisation, and this they did in recognition of hard work done to meet international safety and patient care standards.
The CEO of LUDWMH Mr C Myeza thanked management team and staff for playing a major role in attaining the full accreditation status. He assured the Provincial Department of Health that the standard shall be sustained. The message to staff was that the race has just begun
