Christ the King is a district hospital located in the beautiful rolling hills of Ixopo, the town made famous by the internationally acclaimed novel “Cry the Beloved Country” by Alan Paton. It is approximately 90kms from Pietermaritzburg and 150kms from Durban.
The town itself is a bustling little community with 2 primary schools, a high school, numerous shopping facilities and an internet café amongst other things. Ixopo is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty. One is able to drive in any direction and be sure to come across numerous outdoor activities including hiking in the Drakensberg, horse riding, fishing and mountain biking. For those who prefer a more urban setting to relax and unwind, the town boasts a 9-hole-golf course, tennis courts and both a rugby and soccer club.
Historical Background: The Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood opened the hospital in 1937. It was originally registered for 32 beds. The distinctive statue of 'Christ the King' was put up in 1938. Formally run by the nuns at Sacred Heart Covent, the hospital was taken over by the province in 1984.
Christ the King is a telemedicine send site. The equipment is housed in the ultrasound room. We are connected to other telemedicine sites in KZN. A digital camera is available for teledermatology.
