Another day of Service Excellence at Addington Hospital

Having received COHSASA Accreditation for the second time, staff recognition at Addington Hospital continues.

Another Service Excellence Service Award Ceremony was held Yesterday, 22 November 2005 at Addington hospital. All staff nominated including their heads of departments were invited by Addington’s management to a ceremony to congratulate those whose work has “touched” the hearts of patients, visitors, friends and fellow colleagues. Addington’s management maintains that this ceremony is the true application of the most important Batho Pele principle number 9, Encouraging innovation and rewarding excellence. This is just one principle which proves that we have successfully implemented all 11 principles of Batho Pele, while at the same time the Good Governance team is hard at work ensuring that all our service sections are in line with “People First” philosophy.

As a result of this commitment, staff at Addington always get honoured both internally and externally. This honor results to what the Management terms Service Excellence Award Ceremony. The ceremony is held every quarter to say, “Thank you” to all members of staff who have in their daily work, developed and maintained Addington’s culture of excellence. Visitors, friends and relatives to our patients, staff themselves write to nominate a team or an individual within a specific department whom they feel goes an extra mile in the delivery of service.
This exercise goes a long way in boosting staff morale.
The hospital management added a third award to this ceremony namely, the Ethical Award. It would be remembered that a Strategic Planning session held early this year, resulted to a set of ethical values included in our Mission Statement. Therefore, any act displayed by a member of staff that reflects any one of these ethical values, do not go unnoticed. It is in this ceremony that an award is presented to honor such a member of staff or a team.

Ward 12B represented by Sr. Rex has received more nominations than any other department. Most patients who nominated this ward have indicated that this Medical male ward has compassionate team of both doctors and nurses including the General Assistant. Commenting about the award, Sr Rex said that the Award did not come as surprise as all staff in the ward have worked tirelessly to ensure that, patients receive the first class treatment. “Thanks to all staff, a lot of work went into this, and we deserve this award”, said Sr Rex.

Mr Ismail Shaik walked away with an Ethical award. The values promoted by his acts were Co-operative Governance, Integrity, Shaik from the Supplies department was commended for having detected a product default which would have compromised the hospital’s reputation had it not been detected. Mr Shaik expressed his gratitude for the award and thank the management for making staff feel appreciated.

Mrs Chinniah, the Nursing Manager in her closing remarks assured all staff that, “you are appreciated, and your contribution to hospital’s good image has not gone unnoticed”. Such a remarkable phrase from Mrs Chinniah’s speech remains a confirmation of management’s support, and its commitment in ensuring that service standards are maintained.

During this ceremony, Addington’s Soccer Team also received recognition for outstanding performance in departmental games. Dr Hurst, the Hospital Manager, Mr Pretorius, Finance and Systems Manager used the opportunity to congratulate Addington’s soccer team in its achievement. Mr Msimanga, presented a floating trophy which has become a permanent trophy for Addington hospital as Addington team won the trophy three years consecutively. The management was proud to receive this trophy.

The second trophy presented was won this year during the Regional tournament games, which Mr Msimang vowed his team will cling on to it for the next two years. “I was so happy to show that besides work, there are other things that we can achieve”. This has been regarded as sending a clear message to all staff that Service Excellence in Addington hospital does not only focus on nurses and doctors, but that the application of principle 9 of the White Paper on Transformation of Public Service is across all categories of staff.
