This is the 2nd edition of the Child Health Resource Package.

This resource package is for the use of health personnel working with children in KZN. It has been developed through the contribution of all staff members of the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Paediatric Service who have drawn on written (especially the Red Cross Children’s Hospital A8 Protocols, the Limpopo Newborn Care Protocols, IMCI and South African EDL’s) and verbal input from far and wide.

The contents of this package originate from our Paediatric Teachers. In particular, we acknowledge our Paediatric Teachers and Colleagues from the Department of Paediatrics, University of Kwazulu-Natal, and from the Department of Paediatrics, University of Cape Town.

Thank you to the nursing staff in the Paediatric and Neonatal Wards, who made a major contribution to developing the Clinical Records. The new forms in this edition have also relied on input from far and wide.

Thanks go also to the Management of the Health Services Cluster, Department of Health Kwazulu-Natal for supporting and funding the project.

Thanks also to the teams behind the development of the audit programmes, PPIP and Child PIP, and to the National and Provincial IMCI working groups. These three tools enable major improvements in quality of child health services, and we encourage you to use them, if you are not doing so already.

Thank you to all who have used the first edition. Your use of the tools has already made a positive contribution to the quality of care that children receive in our hospitals, and your feedback has contributed to the improvement of the 1st edition guidelines and forms.

With thanks to Dr Neil McKerrow, without whose vision, support and commitment to the well-being of children this project would not have been possible.
