R100 000.00 donation for eye care services at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital

The Chatsworth Rotary Club handed over a R100,000.00 cheque donation to the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE) for the eye care services at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (MGMH) in Phoenix on the 10th of December 2009, thanks to the effort of the KwaZulu-Natal Eye Care Coalition to attract funding for eye care services.

This donation is a shot in the arm of the hospital to strengthen the health institution’s efforts to deliver the all-important eye care services to patients. The MGMH serves a population of 1,700 000 people in the northern part of Durban. Its Eye Clinic receives patients from Non-Governmental Organisations and Health institutions viz:- Osindisweni Hospital; Newtown A, Inanda C, KwaMashu, Tongaat and Phoenix Community Health Centres; all Provincial and Local Government clinics and five Old Age Homes in the area.

The hospital was identified as a second Sight Saver in eThekwini District in the year 2003. It has established an eye clinic that boasts the state-of-the art equipment for the refractive services and its ophthalmic equipment has been operational since September 2008. Principal amongst the objectives of the eye care clinic is restoration of sight; prevention of avoidable blindness and extended reflective services to all clinics and hospitals without eye care services.
