The present-day hospital has a staff
of over five hundred members, which include twenty doctors, (Eshowe Hospital is
accredited for training interns), four pharmacists and 290 nurses.
Facilities include an emergency room, an endoscopy room, four fully-equipped
operating theatres, a small physiotherapy department and a radiology department
capable of doing a variety of investigations including contrast studies and
ultrasound examinations. Our high
care unit is currently not functioning as staff members are undergoing training,
but it is hoped that this will become fully functional in the not-too-distant
future.
Hospital staff are kept busy managing a wide variety of problems and as Eshowe has recently been the epicentre of a major cholera epidemic, much
experience has been gained in the management of this disorder and its associated community-related issues. The hospital also provides a base for
a primary health care team comprising two mobile clinic teams, a school health team and a tuberculosis control team all of whom perform a variety of community outreach functions.
Today, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are among the more commonly diagnosed problems managed at this hospital and sadly, account for an increasing number of deaths among our patients.
Approximately 9000 outpatients pass through our various clinics each month and admissions account for a similar number of inpatient days each month.
For the enthusiastic health professional, Eshowe Hospital offers the opportunity to gain a wide variety of clinical experience in a friendly atmosphere, working with a committed team. At the same time, one has the benefit of knowing that one’s efforts make a difference and are appreciated by the patients. An added bonus comes from living in a town with a pleasant climate, good educational and recreational facilities, plenty of sites of historical significance and easy access to some of KwaZulu-Natal and indeed South Africa’s prime beauty spots such as the Drakensberg Mountains, various Indian Ocean resorts and the famous Hluhluwe-Umfolosi Game Reserve.
