New white uniform introduced at GJ Crookes hospital during  commemoration of nurses day

On Wednesday 22 May 2013, GJ Crookes Hospital commemorated nurses’ day in a way that has never been done in the hospital before! From this day onwards, GJ Crookes nurses who were previously wearing navy and blue uniforms and other colours were encouraged to wear white uniforms. The uniform change comes after KZN MEC of Health Sbongiseni Dhlomo suggested that as part of a comprehensive health turn-around strategy, all KZN Hospitals must go back to nursing basics; changing of uniform is part of this strategy.

White is associated with innocence, perfection, honesty, goodness, cleanliness, lightness, neutrality and exactitude; characteristics that a nurse and person dealing with people’s lives should possess.

GJ Crookes nurses were encouraged to be tolerant and persistent with their profession because nursing is not an easy profession as the public may assume. Some of the challenges they face are; there is shortage of staff, they must always be careful of how they practice and talk to the community because they are always threatened with possible litigations from public members, there is likelihood of experiencing abuse from patients and community members, chances of getting infected with diseases from patients and occupational injuries which could lead to disability and even death.

Mr. Hamilton Ndwalane from the Ocean View Nursing College said in his motivational speech to the nurses “In the nursing profession; the most important things are professionalism, respect, consistent excellence and self-discipline”

Adv. Brijraj on behalf of the Hospital Board thanked the nurses for their commitment and encouraged them to always take challenges facing the health sector and the institution as a lesson and always work towards improving their profession hence the lives of the community they serve.
