World Hand Hygiene Competition

Hand hygiene is a fundamental principle of infection prevention. When correctly practiced, this basic and cost effective intervention saves lives. Every year May 5 is designated as World Hand Hygiene Day. WHO sends out a call to action for all healthcare facilities in the world to participate in activities that promote hand hygiene.

We encourage province-wide participation in hand wash awareness campaigns. Loads of prizes to be won!

1.The focus of the Save lives: Clean your hands campaign this year is improvement of hand hygiene practices in all surgical services in the healthcare facility. Please see poster. Use social media and local media to highlight your activities. In addition please send photos and videos which will be uploaded onto the KZN DOH websites.

2.Register now and be part of the global movement to improve hand hygiene. Healthcare facilities from around the world have registered in the Save lives: Clean your hands campaign. Follow this link to register: http://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/register/en/

3.Facility activity: Send us videos and photographs with a narrative of original activities that your institution will undertake on 5 May to promote hand hygiene. Winner for the best initiative will receive the hand hygiene floating trophy for 2016/2017. Closing date for submission is 12 May 2016. Email submissions to: jesst08@gmail.com or reshma.misra@kznhealth.gov.za . The onus is on you to ensure that the applications are received.

4. Individual activity: Design a poster that best encompasses the essence of hand hygiene in healthcare facilities. 1st prize: R500 hamper, 2nd prize: R300 hamper, 3rd prize: R150 hamper. Closing date for submission is 12 May 2016. Email submissions to: kaloshnee.ganas@kznhealth.gov.za or eswarlal@ukzn.ac.za . The onus is on you to ensure that the applications are received.
