Hospital Revitalisation Programme at King George V hospital

King George V hospital situated in Stanley Copley drive is well known as a TB Patient hospital and  is now also a  source of employment and hope for better life for much of the informal settlement in Sydenham Overport.  People from nine informal settlements are employed as part of the construction team that is refurbishing the hospital, which is costing R224 Million. This project is part of the revitalization of KZN hospitals, which will be completed  by 2009/10.

The refurbishment project has given hope to the local people as they are now learning new skills, such as welding, painting, plastering and  bricklaying. Do not be mistaken in thinking that construction work is men's work, as  60% of  the workforce is made up of women. Once the project is complete they will receive certificates,  and be allocated to other projects within the revitalization programme.

The Revitalization project is a European Funded project and coordinated through National Department of health. The revitalization has resulted in the commissioning of 400 beds - 320 beds for TB and 80 beds in the surgical unit. A 130 bedded Psychiatric Unit and a Dental Training Facility  is also included.

The revitalization of King George V hospital has resulted in the relocation of surgical services, X-rays, ICU, theatres, SOPD, ICU high care to Wentworth Hospital and Clairwood hospital due to some of the buildings being demolished.

In the 1930s, the hospital was an army base, after the war it was converted to be a hospital for TB patients, however, it was not suitable as there was no infrastructure. Finally after many years of motivation the hospital is being revamped. The planning process took three years.  When the construction is complete King George V hospital will be specialized TB and District Hospital for the community and will alleviate pressure from other hospitals like Addington Hospital and King Edward Hospital.
