T.B. Awareness day at King George V hospital

The 05th of April 2005 was dedicated to educating the communities of Sydenham, Asherville, Claire Estate and surrounding areas on T.B related issues. This community outreach programme was planned to emphasize that we can only beat T.B if we assist our communities in understanding the disease, knowing the symptoms and seeking treatment and mostly complying with the prescribed treatment.

Prominent members of the community attended the awareness day, to name the few Chief Whip B.J Buthelezi -Ethekwini Municipality, Councillor Baig -Sydenham councillor, Inspector Mayen Lazarus-Sydenham Police Station and the community at large. Councillor Baig applauded the work being done by King George V Hospital in the fight against T.B and the strategy being used to educate the community.

D.O.T.S volunteers were also present and were acknowledge for the work that they do for the community. This was in line with this year’s theme “FRONTLINE T.B CARERS” Mr V Masuku explained how the DOTS programme works and the difficulties being faced by the volunteers. He continued by saying “We sometimes have to buy food for the patients using our own money to assist them with their nutritional needs”

“Each one of us can do something about the spread of T.B by identifying people with T.B and refer them to the nearest clinic and also ensuring that those suffering with the disease take their treatment in a prescribed manner” Said Mr S Masondo, Provincial T.B Co-ordinator. If all the above was done by community members the result will be that people will be cured and it will help stop the spread of T.B.
