KZN Department of Health is committed to women empowerment and gender equality

The KZN Department of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to women empowerment. This much became clear during a seminar held to commemorate Public Service Women in Management Week, which was held at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital on Friday, 25 August 2017. In 2007, the Public Service and Administration launched 8 principles to encourage all heads of government departments to develop and implement action plans towards achieving women's empowerment and gender equality within the public service workplace. The principles are as follows:

  • Transformation for non-sexism
    • Promoting and protecting human dignity and human rights of women, including the rights of women with disabilities;

  • Establishing a policy environment
    • The full implementation of national policies and implementation of on-going women’s empowerment and gender equality through the development of departmental and sector- specific wellness and standard operating procedures;

  • Meeting equity targets
    • Ensuring women's full participation and decision-making through the employment of 50% women at all Senior Management System levels;

  • Creating an enabling environment
    • Putting in place departmental and sector Gender Management Systems, adequate institutional mechanisms and dedicated Gender Units;

  • Gender Mainstreaming
    • Incorporating gender perspectives in all work of the Department;

  • Empowerment
    • Capacity development for women's advancement and gender equality

  • Provinding adequate resources
    • Availing adequate human, physical and financial resources for advancing gender equality; and

  • Accountablity, monitoring and evaluation
    • Ensuring full responsibility, ownership for and reporting on advancing gender equality with the Public Service.

The event was well-attended, and was characterised by a jovial atmosphere, with all guests participating in a group drumming performance while some won prizes.
