MEC Dhlomo hands out full school uniform to 100 needy children from his ex-primary school at Mbumbulu

It was a classic case of "charity begins at home" for KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo as his Bhelesi Foundation handed out 100 full school uniforms to children from impoverished homes at the MEC’s alma mater, Putellos Primary School, at Mbumbulu earlier today.

There were smiles all-round as each of the children received their brand new school shirts, skirts, pants and shoes – all thanks to a donation to MEC Dhlomo’s Bhelesi Foundation by Durban wholesale clothing manufacturer, the Kingsgate Clothing Group.

Bhelesi Foundation was established to provide bursary funding for financially disadvantaged students to pursue health science and agricultural science undergraduate studies. Bhelesi Foundation sponsors students to pursue Tertiary training in specific health sciences of Medicine, Pharmacy, Optometry and Dentistry and also in agricultural sciences: Animal Husbandry and Crop Production.

MEC Dhlomo, who started his grade 1 at Putellos in 1965, said he is pleased at the opportunity to help needy children from his birthplace, and thanked Kingsgate Clothing for their generosity in donating the school uniforms.

"This is just an effort to help our Government, which has done a lot to uplift our fellow compatriots. Some parents are still burdened, and you have elderly women spending a portion of their pensions on buying school uniform. I’m here to make a contribution to say that they must rather spend that money on other necessities."

School principal Ms Thenjiwe Mhlongo said many from the school’s 440 learners come from poor families. She thanked MEC Dhlomo and the donors, saying that the school uniforms will make a huge difference to the lives of the children.

Ahmed Dhai, of Kingsgate Clothing, said: This is part of giving back to society… It is very important for people to be part of initiatives to give back to society. it’s an investment in our future. You don’t realise how much confident a good school uniform gives a child and how much better it can make a child perform. I think every child should have an opportunity at being the best they can be. And if we can help in whatever little way, then we must try and do that.
