Media statement on events at the Dr Pixley Ka-Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital earlier today

23 March 2021

The KZN Department of Health today held an assessment test for candidates seeking to be employed as nurses at the Dr Pixley Ka-Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital.

Invitations to write the test were expended to only 250 people.

However, regretettably, thousands of people arrived - mostly those who were not invited.

Although controlling this large crowd was quite challenging, the Department managed to do so with the assistance of the SAPS.

As the leadership of the Department, we have decided to suspend this recruitment process for one day (tomorrow).

This is, pending a meeting this evening to finalise a few technical issues in order to manage the process better - including allowing only candidates who have been informed via SMS that they should come and be part of the assessment process.

The Department will announce further details in due course on how this process will unfold, going forward.
