The Oral and Dental Hospital, Department of Health KwaZulu- Natal and The
School of Dentistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal is motivated by the
fundamental desire to extend dental health and hygiene to all communities in the
catchments area, especially the poor and the formerly disenfranchised.
With a vision committed to social reconstruction and development, the School of Dentistry focuses on the provision of a balanced Oral Health System located within an integrated provincial health strategy. Two foci facilitate this vision: outreach and community interaction. The Oral and Dental Training Hospital, School of Dentistry has a history of community involvement since the days of its foundation. With a specific interest in those on the margins of society, the Institution’s outreach touches institutions of care such as old age homes, orphanages and schools for the disabled. Additionally, pre-schools and state schools serving poorer communities feature prominently in the Dentistry outreach calendar. Clinics run by The Oral and Dental Training Hospital, School of Dentistry also run from time to time in economically depressed satellite communities both within the Greater Durban Functional Region, and further afar, in the rural areas. Research output reflects the outreach and community service commitments of the Institution, with evaluation and ongoing programme. School health, a central area of outreach, features in the research profile with a systematic programme under development to integrate oral health into school health interventions. Like many disciplines, The Oral and dental Training Hospital School of Dentistry keeps its eye on continuous assessment and design in the context of dentistry education, with a project underway examining a curriculum framework for undergraduate studies in dental health science. |
