About Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is one of the busiest
departments. The medical staffs, at present, consists of three full-time
Orthopaedic Consultants, 2 part-time Orthopaedic Consultants, 14
Registrars/Medical Officers and 2-3 Community Service Officers, 4 interns. The
attendant nursing staffs is an integral part of the department. Three additional
registrars have been approved for Edendale and two more for Grey's hospital,
making a total of 11 registrars in Pietermaritzburg complex. Additional
posts have already been advertised and will be filled as of 1 January 2007.

The aim of the Department at Edendale Hospital is:
As part of the Provincial Health Services – to participate in the health
service to those patients who wish to attend this hospital and to provide the
orthopaedic management according to current orthopaedic practices to these
patients as circumstances in the hospital allow.
To participate in medical education by training medical students and
Registrars and by disseminating knowledge of orthopaedic principles and
techniques to the medical community as a whole.
To engage in orthopaedic research, conducting clinical studies in
orthopaedic methods and techniques
To provide an excellent environment that is conducive to developing the medical and nursing staff to
their full potential.
Physical facility
Orthopaedic outpatient department with 5 consultation rooms, rooms for
outpatient procedure (minor OT & POP Application) and recovery etc.
Male, female and paediatric inpatient orthopaedic ward with about 144 beds.
9 Orthopaedic theatre slotes a week besides 24 hour emergency theatres.
Two portable image intensifiers for theatre use
Surgical instruments for all kinds of orthopaedic operations including
arthroplasty, some of them are available as loan sets
Arthroscope with accessary instruments
Three on-call rooms for orthopaedic doctors on call
Departmental Seminar room with audiovisual equipment for departmental academic / teaching program

Major disciplines - general surgery, medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics &
gynaecology, ophthalmology, psychiatry etc
Occupational Therapy Department
Clinical Psychologist - Visits twice a week
Orthopaedic workshop - orthotics and prosthetics - visit once a week
24 hours x-ray including CT Scan and Ultrasound

Teaching and Training
Registrar Training Affiliated to the Orthopaedic Department, Medical School, University of
Natal, Durban, it has recently been accredited full teaching status. The
registrar will rotate through Durban hospitals to get wide exposure required for
the fellowship examination. One can write higher Diploma in
orthopaedics exam as well
