R.K. Khan Hospital Pharmacy brought tremendous honour to the country when
its innovative decongestion project won the prestigious All Africa Public
Service Innovation Award (AAPSIA) at the award ceremony held in Congo
Brazzaville. The award was received by Pharmacy Manager Mr. Brian Pillay and
Hospital CEO Dr. PS Subban on Friday July 26th 2013. The decongestion project which was initiated in 2007 by Mr. Pillay and Mr. Dan Maistry involves a partnership with community organisations whereby community centres are utilized (temples, churches and community halls) to issue chronic medicines to patients. 13 community centres are being used to dispense medicines to more than 15000 patients per month. Patients only visit the hospital every six months on their review dates. Medicines are pre-dispensed and transported to these facilities by pharmacy staff and issued to patients from 07h30 to 10h00 after which any uncollected medicines is taken back to the pharmacy. Patients save on time and transport costs as these facilities are close to
their homes. They have their blood pressure and blood sugars checked and are
provided with refreshments at some facilities. The hospital benefits from
the significantly reduced congestion. Those patients that do attend the
hospital are now afforded a better service. |
