Diabetic Awareness Day 14 November 2005

The R.K.Khan Hospital Diabetic Foot Care Team joined hands with CDESG and the Rotary Club of Chatsworth at the Diabetic Awareness Day, held at Chatsworth Stadium. Volunteering their services were the members of the R. K. Khan Hospital Diabetic Foot Care Team, from the Department of Surgery.

101 Diabetics were screened. 41% were found to be at high risk for developing ulcers on their feet, with the subsequent complications that could lead up to a major amputation of their feet. Of diabetic lower limb amputations, 85% are preceded by an ulcer. 7% of diabetics, without proper care and counseling will one day loose a foot through amputation.

Counseling was provided, together with pamphlets on what to do to avoid getting an ulcer. There were poster sized printouts of a PowerPoint Presentation on the Diabetic Foot, which included photographs to illustrate the conditions described, and to make clearer concepts relating to foot care.

On display were samples of products that may be used in the care of the Diabetic Foot. Orthotics and Custom made boots, and an artificial limb were on display.

Diabetic Shoes of local manufacture were on display, together with a pamphlet on these, with ordering information.

The team was interviewed over the public address system, so that the general public was made aware of the concern at the R. K. Khan Hospital with respect to the diabetic foot, and of the on going need for that concern.
