Dr Andy Sewlal was born in Durban. He matriculated at the Avoca High School in
Avoca. He completed his bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the Kasturba
Medical College in India in 1984. He also obtained a diploma in
Anaesthesia from the College of Medicine of South Africa in 1988. In 2002
he completed his Masters of Business Administration (CUM LAUDE) from the
Graduate School of Business, University of Durban Westville.
He commenced internship training at King Edward VIII in 1985, he then worked
as a Medical Officer in the department of Anaesthetics and department of
Surgery. He was promoted to Medical Superintendent at Clairwood Hospital
1996. In October 2000 he was promoted to Senior Medical Superintendent
at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Thereafter he was promoted to
Hospital Manager (Chief Medical Superintendent) King George V Hospital.
In January 2003 he was transferred from King George V to Mahatma Gandhi
Memorial Hospital as Hospital Manager. In May 2004 Dr Sewlal was promoted
to Senior Manager (Chief Director) Clinical Support and Logistics.
Dr Sewlal served as a member of South African Medical Association (SAMA) in the
Senior Hospital Doctors Association from 1996. He was elected chairperson
of the Senior Hospital Doctors Association from 1998 to 2000. Dr Sewlal
is married to Dr Narisha Bhagwandin who is a Dentist in Private Practice and they have 2
children.
