Ms. Spies was born in Durban and attended Wentworth High School in Austerville. She studied
further at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg) and graduated as a Dietician. Her profession and post-graduate qualifications are in Nutrition and Dietetics. After 7 years of
practice as a Clinical Dietician, she moved into Community Nutrition. She was appointed to the post of Deputy Director: Nutrition, Provincial Health Services, KwaZulu-Natal in 1995 and
transferred to the Western Cape Department of Health as the Manager of the Nutrition programme for that Province in 1997. She was recently appointed as Director in 2002 for the
Nutrition Programe for KwaZulu-Natal.
In 1995, she was appointed by the National Minister of Health to form part of the committee that was responsible for the development of a National Nutrition Strategy for South Africa.
This strategy was adopted as National policy in 1997.
She is presently registered with the University of Cape Town as an Oliver Tambo Fellow for a postgraduate qualification in Health Management |
