Stanger hospital eye care centre is recognized by Department of Health and “Vision 2020
for Cataract surgeon training centre since March 2006.
Eye care service at Stanger hospital is 24 hours. We are the only department
who provides 24 hour emergency eye care services.
Cataract camps: Nine (9) weekend cataract camps successfully held at our
centre to reduce cataract surgery back log. First time effort in whole South
Africa.
Regular cataract surgery operation on Saturday. First time effort in whole
South Africa.
Setting up FIRST TIME tele ophthalmology service at Stanger Hospital probably
first time effort of starting tele-ophthalmology in Kwazulu Natal.
Proper appointment system and the establishment of a proper eye out-patient
department.
Proper diagnosis and effective management at eye OPD.
Proper control and dispensing of ophthalmic medications.
Management of all kinds of eye trauma and if necessary telephonic consultation with St.Aidans hospital.

Regular cataract and glaucoma surgery. We are performing 10 to 12 cataract and glaucoma surgeries per week.
Total 1500(approximately) cataracts with Intra Ocular Lens implant done from August 2004 to date.
Setting up of proper diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy clinic and total
400 (approximately) patients benefited by receiving timeous laser treatment: because of early detection of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy.

Training of medical officers who are appointed at Stanger hospital eye care centre from January 2005.
Regular community outreach programme on eye care service.
Ophthalmic training for PHC nurses. (At least to identify, manage and
deliver primary eye care)

Ophthalmology department initiates Tele-medicine services at Stanger hospital.

Referrals to Durban have drastically reduced, which benefited patients in that
waiting reduced to only 2 to 3 days for tertiary care at St.Aidans and IALCH.
