The covering of the eye and inner eyelids is called the conjunctiva.
If irritated, it may become red and swollen, and the eyes may itch and tear.
If caused by an allergen, it is called allergic conjunctivitis.
Common allergens are pollen, animal skin, perfumes, cosmetics and smoke.
It is not sight-threatening.
Symptoms can be avoided by avoiding allergens if possible.
If environment-related, stay indoors when pollen levels are high.
Various eye drops are available to control symptoms. Antihistamine pills taken
for allergies also help eye symptoms.
Consult your doctor before using any medicines.
