Criteria for Admission to Umgeni hospital

Admissions to this hospital are done through our social workers, who assess possible applicants, as per our admission criteria.A screening committee decides together on the suitability of applicants and also which ward would be most suitable for a specific patient.  The most important criteria is summarized as follows:

• A sub-average intelligence

• Have impairments in their adaptive functioning, in at least two social skills

• The onset must have been before the age of 18 years

• People with physical disabilities

• People who suffer from the effects of organic brain syndrome may be considered

• All possible placements/resources in the community must have been investigated and proved inadequate

• Applicants are to be placed as near to their relatives as possible, so as to ensure future contact.
