Friends of Umgeni hospital
 

The “Friends of Umgeni” is a registered non-profit organization which was founded in 1978 by Mr. Derek Edwards, who together with a group of friends realized the great need to improve the quality of life of patients living at Umgeni Hospital. It is currently under the chairmanship of Mr Reg Dean. The Friends of Umgeni rely on donations and members’ subscriptions and does not receive any government subsidy. The main aims of the ‘Friends of Umgeni’ are To provided amenities and facilities that are not provided by the government To promote social and recreational activities. To collect funds for outings, parties and special events such as Christmas and Easter where every patient receives a gift of some sort Friends of Umgeni have provided computers in the One to One therapy department, shade awnings for many wards, refurbished completely the main playground, garden benches, concrete garden furniture, radios, toys, garden hoses and much more. Friends of Umgeni have approximately 285 members, from all parts of the Republic of South Africa. Friends of Umgeni enjoy the full and wholehearted support of the management and staff at Umgeni Hospital. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all these Friends who so ably live up to their motto of: "Because somebody cared, because somebody did something, a child smiled and was comforted".
