Unforgettable IDDP (International Day of Disabled Persons) Performance

The people of KwaZulu-Natal came out in their numbers to witness the launch of
the Province’s International Day of Disabled Persons that was staged at the
semi-rural area of Swayimani (Swayimani High School) on Tuesday, 21 December
2004. This day attracted a huge number of physically challenged people, the theme of the day was “Do nothing about us without us” this was lived since the Programme Director was physically challenged so was the two guest speakers. The band from Umgeni hospital (for mentally retarded people) dished out the best music ever to be played by a live band, they kept everyone entertained and willing to listen attentively to the next speaker. Numerous guests shared the stage with their uplifting speeches but the most touching speech was that of Mrs. Barbara Watt from African Enterprise who mentioned that “We still look at disabled people as inferior which gradually see them lack confidence because of inferiority, the disabled should change the notion that they always depend on others for help, they should take the difficulties they encounter as stepping stones”. Like the Umgeni hospital band, there is one blind member that plays the concertina far better than the people who are not physically challenged. |

She made special emphasis that 11% of the world’s population is disabled
deriving from road accidents and various illnesses. We should start treating the
disabled persons like individuals because we wouldn’t like to be treated
likewise when we end up in their condition. This event provided the patients a chance to socialize with different people; they were so delighted to play for the audience that featured the Honorable Mayor Cllr. B Sithole-Mlaba and the District Manager of Umgungundlovu Health District Ms. SRG Shezi. This will always be the unforgettable day for the Umgeni Hospital (UNFORGETTABLE BAND) and disabled people of the entire world. |
