Occupational Therapy
| The Occupational Therapy
Department at Umgeni Hospital is made up of one Chief Occupational
Therapist, one Senior Occupational Therapy Assistant, one entry grade
Occupational Therapy Assistant and six Occupational Therapy Assistants
Trainees of whom will qualify by October 2005 as Occupational Therapy
Assistants. The Occupational Therapy service focuses on the professional skills training of the mentally retarded patients. These patients attend the work center, which trains them in hygiene, socialization, sport and work skills. Over and above the work center patient receives individual therapy when required. The Occupational Therapy staff provides input to wheelchair bound clients by correctly assessing their assistive device needs and wheelchair needs they also provide regular input on ward programmes. They also run the orthotic clinic (specialized boots, walkers and moulded seats) that extends not only to the Umgeni Hospital clients but also people in need of specialized orthotics. Occupational Therapy service extends to the extent of supporting other rehabilitation initiatives in the district namely · Social welfare (screening disabilities) It is gratifying to learn that the Occupational Therapy department doesn’t only provide its service to the Umgeni Hospital patients but to the local community as well, which has developed mutual relationship between the staff, patients, the community and the entire Umgeni hospital family |
