Services offered at Umgeni hospital

Care is provided by a multi-disciplinary team.  As many of our patients are unable to communicate, or take care of their personal hygiene, 24 hour nursing care is available.  Medical officers are available on a sessional baiss.  We also receive medical coverage from Townhill hospital. If required acutely ill patients are transferred to the appropriate hospitals for further management. Other services available include:

• Dietetics 

• Foot care

• Medical Care

• Occupational Therapy

• Orthotics

• Psychology

• Psychosocial rehabilitation

• Physiotherapy

• Social Work

Stimulation / rehabilitation programes are offered on a daily basis where a variety of activities are offered eg. furniture restoration, knitting, mat-weaving, cushion making and various life skills.

Children who are unable to attend a school for special learners, attend the Activity Centre where they receive stimulation.  Regular outings are arranged for the patients with assistance of community service groups.  A great number of volunteers assist with the the stimulation and development of patients.

We as staff are willing to educate the public on different issues regarding mental retardation, such as:

• What is mental retardation and what are some of the possible factors contributing to it.

• How can mental retardation be prevented.

• How can mental retardation be recognized and assessed.

• Understanding the parents of children with disabilities, and the process they need to go through in order to accept this condition.

• How can service organizations and individuals be involved in the case of the mentally retarded?

• We encourage small groups of people to visit our hospital so as to learn about mental retardation and how they can become involved with our patients.
