On the 24th of January 2007 Wentworth Hospital had the
pleasure of being visited by the MEC Ms Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni. The
hospital was buzzing with media as they were invited for a Media
Breakfast and Launch campaign on Voluntary Counselling and Testing.
The theme was “Knowledge is Power: Know Your Status”. The event was
opened with a word of prayer by Pastor Dube. Some of the guests included
the Head of Department, Dr. B.M. Nyembezi and Mr. W. Nzimande , SABC-
uKhozi Station Manager.
Delivering her speech the MEC encouraged every individual to make a
responsible decision of knowing his or her HIV status.
She stated that the Department of Health in Kwazulu-Natal have made a
partnership with one of the biggest radio stations uKhozi FM to work
hand in hand in educating the public on the scourge disease and also
encouraged men to take their sexual lives seriously as the statistics
that are available are mainly from women during their antenatal classes.
Other guests included, the Chairperson of the Health Portfolio Committee
Mrs. Z. Ludidi, Mrs. Winile Zondi and Mrs. Vivian Tambo who are also the
members of the Health Portfolio Committee, Mr. Leon Mbangwa,
Communications Manager, Mr. T. Msiza, District office manager, eThekwini
Deputy Mayor, Logie Naidoo and Vicky Masuku from uKhozi FM
A further encouragement was made to everyone to utilize
the services that are available in the hospital.
Delivering his message of support on the partnership between the
Department and uKhozi FM, the station manager Mr. Nzimande spoke of the
importance of the media to report on issues that affect people’s lives with
facts at all times. He stated that this partnership was very important as the
media has the means to reach the furthest places. After the event the MEC, HoD
and some of the dignitaries did their public testing at the Masibambisane clinic
a VCT site within the hospital.
