Admission requirements for the advanced diploma in midwifery (R1497)

An advert is published yearly, and is open to in-service nurses who qualify and are employed by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health

Minimum requirements to be considered for selection to the Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497)

  • Grade 12, Senior Certificate
  • Registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as General Nurse (R683)
  • Registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as General Nurse (R171)

Important points to remember

  • A circular for the advertisement for one Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (SANC R1497, NQF Level 7) is sent to Districts, Hospitals, Clinics and published in the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health website once a year.
  • The requirements of the Advanced Diploma in Midwifery training programme are stipulated in the advertisement.
  • Applications are invited from the nursing occupational group Professional Nurse (General Nurse) who are permanently employed within the KZN Department of Health and are registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a General Nurse (R683 and R171))
  • Instructions in the advert are to be complied with e.g. regarding the information to be submitted and documentation to be submitted with the application.
  • Applications for this programme are to be submitted together with the minutes signed-off by the Institutional Health Education Training and Development (IHETD) Committee Chairperson before onward submission to the relevant District Health Education Training and Development Committee (DHETDC) for approval and sign-off by the District Human Resource Manager.
  • Minutes of the DHETDC indicating the qualifying candidates in priority order must be forwarded to the Chairperson KZN College of Nursing Central Selection Committee before the closing date.
  • Successful candidates will be required to sign an agreement with the Department of Health, will be expected to attend as a full-time student, be prepared to attend lectures and participate in work integrated learning in shifts which shall include public holidays, weekends and nights, within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health Hospital and Clinics as part of the programme requirements.
  • On completion of training, students will be registered with the South African Nursing Council as Midwife/ Accoucher category in line with the Nursing Act (Act No. 33 of 2005).
