General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital (GJGM) was formerly known as Stanger Hospital. The Hospital was renamed after struggle stalwart General Justice "Gizenga" Mpanza who was born on 5 September 1937 at Groutville Mission Reserve. Mpanza passed away in 30 July 2002. The late Mpanza was "a gallant" Umkhonto weSizwe army general who was part of a generation that was imprisoned on Robben Island for 15 years. As a selfless leader, he stood for free and better health systems, education, social justice, equality and just land restitutions.
GJGM Regional Hospital is a 545-bedded Regional and District Hospital. The hospital is located in Kwa-Dukuza within the ILembe Health District. The Hospital serves an estimated population of 600 000 from the ILembe District. The institution also serves the three referring District Hospitals, two CHCs and thirty three PHC clinics. The hospital has an average of 78% bed occupancy rate and an average length of stay of six (6) days. The hospital on average conducts 550 to 600 deliveries per month. The hospital is situated along the N2 making it extremely busy with trauma emergency cases.
