Singasinqoba isifo sohlangothi

Umnyango wezeMpilo KwaZulu-Natali uzimisele ukuqhubeka nokuqwashisa umphakathi ngobungozi bezifo ezigadla kungazelele muntu, zithathe imiphefumulo zishiye kukhalwa, njengesifo sohlangothi.

Ngokwenhlangano yesifo sohlangothi i-Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, isifo sohlangothi, esihlobene nesenhliziyo, singesesibili esibulala kakhulu abesifazane, futhi sihlasela bona kakhulu ngoba yibo abakhuluphele kakhulu uma beqhathaniswa nabesilisa.

Ngaphezu kwalokhu, abesifazane yibo abahlaselwa wukwenyuka komfutho wegazi ngesikhathi bekhulelwe, wukhwantalala, nengcindezi yomphefumulo. Lenhlangano ithi bangu-150 abantu abahlaselwa yisifo sohlangothi kuleli ngosuku, kanti ngonyaka balinganiselwa ku-4000 abashonayo.

Njengoba imikhakha eyahlukene yezempilo emhlabeni jikelele izoba semkhankasweni yokusabalalisa ulwazi ngesifo sohlangothi ngo-Okthoba 29, okuwu-World Stroke Day, sifisa ukukhumbuza abantu bakithi ukuthi lesi sifo - esihlasela kakhulu abesifazane - siyagwemeka.

Sidalwa yini isifo sohlangothi?

Lesi sifo sigadla ngesikhathi kuvaleka noma kuqhuma imithambo yegazi ehambisa i-oxygen emqondweni. Abantu abasengcupheni yilabo ababhemayo, abakhuluphele kakhulu, abanomfutho wegazi ophezulu nabanesifo sikashukela.

Nakuba kwenzeka ukuthi umuntu abe nezingqinamba ezingamubeka engcupheni yokuba nesifo sohlangothi ngenxa yofuzo, kodwa esikhathini esiningi lokhu kudalwa ukudla okungenamsoco, okunamafutha noma usawoti omuningi; ukubhema ugwayi, ukucwila ezinkambeni zikaFaro; ukungazivocavoci – okungaholela ekukhuluphaleni ngokweqile - kanye nokukhandleka ngokomqondo.

Sesiyazi ukuthi ingcindezi enkulu yezifo esibhekene nayo ibangwa yizifo ezithelelayo nezingathathelani. Kulezi zifo singabala ezingamahlalakhona (njengesohlangothi, esomfutho wegazi ophezulu, esikashukela, umdlavuza, nesezinso); yinhlanganisela ye-HIV, TB ne-AIDS; ukushona komama uma beyoteta kanye nabantababo; kanye nezigameko zokuhlukumezeka ngenxa yokulimala ezingozini zomgwaqo nokulinyazwa ngezikhali ezinhlobonhlobo.

Lapha KwaZulu-Natali baningi abantu abaphethwe yinhlanganisela yalezi zifo, nokwenza amasosha abo omzimba abe buthakathaka. Uma labantu behlaselwa wukugula, bekhulelwa noma belimala lokhu kubafaka esimweni sempilo esixakile, bese kuba nzima ukubelapha.

Konke lokhu kwenza abantu basheshe bagule, bagcine beshone isikhathi singakashayi, bese beshiya izintandane ngokungenasidingo.

Lengcindezi yezifo iphinde idle enkulu imali, yenze kube nzima nakuhulumeni ukuba ahlinzeke umphakathi ngezinsiza ngokufanele njengoba izikhungo zezempilo zigcwele ziphuphuma. Ngokubambisana singasiguqula lesisimo.

Kuningi esingakufunda emazweni afana no-China, Cuba ne-Brazil ngokuqhakambisa kwawo ukugwenywa kwezifo. Yini ongayenza ukugwema isifo sohlangothi?

Lezi zifo ezingamahlalakhona – ezinye zazo eziholela esifweni sohlangothi - singazinciphisa ngokuzijwayeza ukuzivocavoca, sivakashele nasemtholampilo okungenani kanye ngonyaka ukuze sithole ukuhlolwa. Ukuzijwayeza ukuyohlolwa emtholampilo ngaphandle kokulinda ukuthi uze ugule kungasiza ngokuthi kusheshe kubonakale uma usengcupheni.
